History
let me tell thee
This traditional Yorkshire Dales pub has been at the heart of the local community since the 16th Century when it was first ‘new’! We are honoured to be the current custodians of its rich tapestry of social history.
Well ahead of its time, the New Inn rose to fame in 1971 as the first non-smoking pub in the world under the colourful ownership of Jack Showers. His controversial decision, following the death of a close friend from lung cancer, captured the interest of the media across the globe.
Later, in the ‘90s, the New Inn became a mecca for cyclists with a mountain bike livery under legendary landlord and endurance rider John Pitchers who described his regulars as the pub’s “crown jewels”.
In 2007, after his tenure Phil and Carol Smith saved the New Inn from the hands of a commercial chain at the 11th hour and stayed until 2019.
MEET THE IVES
Your Local, Run by Local People
After a fallow period in recent years, we were excited to be able to buy the New Inn in late 2024. It was ‘our local’ and we yearned to put it back on the map as a haven for real ale and spirit lovers, as well as a destination for foodies looking for something significantly different.
Alexa Ives is the driving force whose vision for “bringing the pub back to life” you see now. She was familiar with the hospitality business, with eight years working front of house at The Box Tree in her arsenal. Her not-so-silent investment partner and husband, Chris Ives, brings beer and spirits expertise with impressive credentials. He started Ilkley Brewery in 2009 and was a founding partner in Otterbeck Distillery.
We're Dog Friendly
All Woofers welcome
Four-legged friends are always honoured guests at New Inn Appletreewick in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales where all our rooms are dog friendly at no extra charge. We offer a range of doggy meals and even dog beer!
Our extra special canine retreat is perfect for dog friendly holidays and short breaks. Your furry friends will be welcomed with their very own blanket, bowls and a little treat from us. Dogs are welcome everywhere in our pub but please keep them on a lead in public areas.
With a myriad of footpaths* on the doorstep, your trusty companion can look forward to long walkies together in the beautiful countryside with plenty of exciting sticks and the River Wharfe for a spot of swimming.
*Please note that during lambing time in the spring you are respectfully asked to keep your dog on a lead when passing through some fields.

Stopped on our way to the valley of desolation and I think I had one of the best pie and peas I've ever had. All homemade and the beers great as well. Will definitely be stopping again in the future to try out the rest of the menu. Really worth visiting.
Owners are so passionate about their pub , it shows through the food and ale they serve. Food was 9/10 , breakfast and dinner. Would highly recommend, and we will return.
